  A Schottky diode is a metal semiconductor diode with a low voltage drop of 0.15V to 0.45V and very high switching speeds,these are also known as Schottky barrier diodes or hot carrier Schottky diodes.

  Basic Concept

  The BAT54A is a Schottky diode in a surface mount device(SMD)package that provides low on-state voltage drop and fast switching.The device is equipped with a PN connection protection/protection ring for ESD and transient protection,and is also a RoHS-compliant"green"device.

  The BAT54A is formed by metal-semiconductor PN junctions,and like normal diodes,these are planar Schottky diodes with integrated protection rings.

  Typically,these Schottky diodes are used in protection and rectification circuits,in low voltage circuits with unacceptable voltage drop during conduction,and in devices that need to be rated for low voltage drop during conduction.It is used in circuits where power efficiency is critical.The BAT54A device is capable of delivering significant current at low voltage drops,thus providing the high efficiency required for battery powered systems.

  In addition,the BAT54A is designed for recovery(forward conduction to reverse voltage blocking)and uses only 5ns to drive high frequency applications.

  Application Circuit

  The BAT54A Schottky diode operates similarly to any other rectifier diode and can be installed in protection rectifier circuits.Therefore,a typical application circuit for the BAT54A can be shown below:

  It conducts in the forward bias direction only when the positive anode is connected to a positive voltage and the cathode is grounded.

  Leakage currents of up to 0.1mA flow in the opposite direction only when the positive anode and cathode are grounded.

  Under forward bias conditions,a maximum voltage of 1V appears across the device,while in reverse bias,the full supply voltage appears across the device.

  In the above circuit,the BAT54A Schottky diode is used as a protection diode for the microcontroller.Here the power supply feeds the microcontroller and the diode is connected in series for protection.
